Best Time to Visit Duluth, MN: A Month-by-Month Guide from Your Hosts

The quick answer: It depends on your crew. Come in summer for beaches, boat tours and the most ships. Come in late September or early October for fall colors. Come from late November to Dec 26 for Bentleyville. Come on a winter weeknight for the quietest, calmest Canal Park, with an indoor pool to fall back on.
We're Tiegen and Keenan. Tiegen grew up in Duluth, and we host families in Canal Park year round, so this is the same advice we give our own guests.

Duluth month by month
January. Cold and quiet. Ships keep coming until the Soo Locks close in mid-January (Jan 15 in 2026). Ice and sea smoke on the lake on clear, cold mornings. Pool weekends.
February. The quietest month in Canal Park. Good for a cheap, calm getaway built around the pool, the aquarium and short walks.
March. Still winter. The locks reopen in late March (March 25 in 2026), and the first ships of the season arrive soon after.
April. Mud season. Ships are back. Fewer crowds, and the lake can still have ice early in the month.
May. Things open back up. Vista Fleet cruises start (May 5 in 2026), the William A. Irvin opens for tours (May 1 in 2026), and Glensheen's daily season starts mid-May.

June. Summer starts. Grandma's Marathon weekend (June 19, 2027) is one of the busiest weekends of the year in Canal Park, so book early.
July and August. Peak season. Warm days, cool lake breezes, beaches on Park Point, festivals at Bayfront Festival Park and the most visitors.
September. Our favorite month to recommend. Summer crowds thin after Labor Day, the Irvin's regular tours wrap up mid-month, and the colors start late in the month.
October. Fall colors, usually best early in the month near Duluth, with a second wave along the shore. Leaf weekends are busy.
November. Quiet until Bentleyville opens (Nov 21 in 2026). Thanksgiving week gets busy.
December. Bentleyville through Dec 26, holiday markets and ships still running. Weekends near Christmas fill first.
Our tip: If you can travel midweek, come on a winter weeknight. Canal Park is calm, the pool is ready, and you can usually still catch a ship until mid-January.
When is Duluth cheapest and quietest?
Usually winter weeknights from January through March, outside of holiday weeks. Summer weekends and big event weekends are the busiest.
