How to Watch Ships Under the Aerial Lift Bridge
How to Watch Ships Under the Aerial Lift Bridge
By Tiegen Brickson, co-owner, The Brix (Our Story) · Last updated October 2026
The quick answer: Check the ship schedule on canalpark.com, then walk to the ship canal by the Aerial Lift Bridge and the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center about 15 minutes before a ship is due. The bridge lifts, the ship and the bridge trade horn blasts, and the ship passes close enough to wave at the crew. Shipping season usually runs from late March to mid-January.
We're Tiegen and Keenan. Tiegen grew up in Duluth, and we host families in Canal Park year round, so this is the same advice we give our own guests.

Where is the best place to watch ships in Duluth?
The ship canal pier. Walk out the pier next to the Aerial Lift Bridge. Ships pass right beside you.
The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. Free, right on the canal, and a good place to wait inside when it's cold.
The lighthouse pier. Walk to the end of the canal to see ships coming in from the open lake.
From your condo. Aurora Black, Captain's Quarters and Dockside Suite 1 have views of the William A. Irvin and the harbor side.

How do you read the ship schedule?
The canalpark.com schedule lists expected arrivals and departures with estimated times. Times shift with weather and loading, so check again before you head out. "Arriving" ships come in under the bridge from the lake; "departing" ships head out.
When does the bridge lift?
For ships and for many smaller boats, so it goes up often in summer. If you're driving to Park Point, expect to wait a few minutes while it's up.
Our tip: Bring the kids out for a departure at dusk. The bridge is lit up, the horns echo off the buildings, and the ship heads out onto the open lake.
Can you go on a ship?
Yes. The William A. Irvin, a retired ore boat, is open for tours seasonally (roughly May to mid-September in 2026). It's not wheelchair accessible. Vista Fleet harbor cruises take you under the bridge and past the docks from spring through late fall.
